Time and Dates
Time
On spie.org and SPIE social media properties use the 12-hour clock. For North American events use the 12-hour clock.
For European, Australian, and Asian events use the 24-hour clock.
Always use hours and minutes. For the 12-hour clock include the time period (AM/PM).
12:00 PM
Never ‘12 PM’ or ‘noon’ or ‘12 noon’ (the first is acceptable on social media)
For the 24-hour clock AM/PM is not necessary, but the use of zero in the hours is standard.
08:00
14:30
For a time range, always include the hours and minutes for each instance and their time period. Use an en dash WITHOUT spaces on either side for the range. Never ‘to’ or ‘through’ unless it makes sense in a sentence.
11:30 AM–1:30 PM
2:30 PM–5:00 PM
Never
9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
2:00 to 5:00 PM
2–5 PM
But (24-hour clock)
12:00–15:30
08:00–09:30
AM/PM
Always uses caps and no periods. Always include AM/PM at each instance. Use a space between the time and AM/PM. Not necessary when using the 24-hour clock.
12:00 PM
11:30 AM–1:30 PM
Time Zones
When it is necessary to clarify time zone on spie.org and SPIE social media properties default to our home time zone of Pacific time. Conference schedules assume location time zone so clarification is not needed.
Use the PT abbreviation year-round, leaving out standard or daylight, and insert a space between the AM/PM and the PT:
"11:30 AM PT" not "11:30 AM PST"
Days of the week and month
All dates are written in little-endian format without commas — day month year. With the day of the week included insert a comma — weekday, day month year.
If used, follow the day of the week with a comma. Again, otherwise do not use commas in the full expression of a date.

For date ranges, use en dash WITHOUT spaces and ranges are expressed in days of the month. Do not use month in the first day of the range unless the month changes during the range. Always include the year at the end of the range.
